The first meeting of the DCBA’s newly-formed Ad Hoc Paralegal Committee, held on Tuesday, May 24, was a grand success. The Committee was formed primarily by the efforts of Attorney Sharon Knobbe (Knobbe, Laho, Gradishar & Mack, LLC), 1st Vice-President of the DCBA; Attorney Maria Mack (Knobbe, Laho, Gradishar & Mack, LLC), Founding Chair of the Committee; and Sarmistha Banerjee (Law Offices of Robert J. Kartholl), Founding Vice-Chair of the Committee and Vice-President of the COD Paralegal Students’ Club. Both Ms. Knobbe and Ms. Mack are instructors in COD’s ABA-approved program. The Committee’s inaugural meeting had 80 registered participants, including attorneys, working paralegals and paralegal students. COD was represented by Sally Fairbank, Program Coordinator, and several officers of the COD Paralegal Students’ Club. Lunch was hosted by the DCBA. The meeting began with a welcome by Ms. Mack. She was followed by Leslie Monahan, Executive Director of the DCBA, who spoke briefly about the benefits of DCBA membership. Two presentations were made. The first was “E-filing and Procedures from the Clerk’s Office,” by Mary Kay Lunt with the assistance of Kim Franco, both from the DuPage County Clerk’s Office. The presentation was well-received and there were several follow-up questions. The second presentation was “The Do’s and Don’t’s of Job Applications/Resumes” by Ms. Mack, an insightful and helpful talk on how to create a memorable cover letter and a strong resume. The large attendance at the meeting was very encouraging and a clear indication that the Paralegal Committee is serving a need in the community. The committee aims to provide quality learning and networking opportunities that will benefit both paralegals and their employers. We welcome your support, thoughts and help.
