Prairie State Legal Services, Inc. (PSLS) is a non-profit legal services organization with 40 years of experience providing quality legal services to low-income persons, currently with 12 field offices in 36 cities in northern and central Illinois. Our expertise extends to family law, public benefits, consumer law, health, and education, among other areas. In housing matters, we specialize in fair housing/housing discrimination, foreclosure defense, landlord/tenant disputes, and federally-subsidized housing rights. We have maintained multiyear special projects, with diverse funding to provide legal advocacy services to persons with HIV/AIDS; disabled children arid adults; the elderly; the homeless; victims of domestic violence. and many others. Annually, PSLS handles over 18,000 applications for legal help and serves over 12,000 clients.
We are seeking applicants for a full-time (37.5 hours per week) PARALEGAL position in our community legal services office located in WAUKEGAN. Competitive salary with other legal non-profits, DOE; excellent benefits.
JOB DESCRIPTION: This paralegal will work with PSLS attorneys to assist victims of domestic violence to obtain immigration and other civil relief. Responsibilities include: client interviewing, investigation, legal research and writing, Spanish interpretation and translation, assistance with outreach/public education in community, as well as other duties.
QUALlFICATIONS: Graduation from or current enrollment in an accredited paralegal program, Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) accreditation, or two or more years of experience at law office. Experience. in services for victims of domestic violence is desirable. Compassion and sensitivity to the needs of victims is required. Successful applicants will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting equal access to justice, strong interpersonal skills, excellent oral/written communications, and computer competency. The applicant must have the ability to work effectively as a team member. Preference is given to applicants with immigration law experience and Spanish language proficiency.
